Diversity decreed

The Prairie South School Division is taking steps to formalize its commitment to diversity for both students and all staff.

Prairie South School Division passes motion to adopt new diversity policy

Prairie South School Division has taken an official step towards celebrating diversity, but according to director of education Tony Baldwin, it’s hardly coming out of the blue.

“It’s really an extension of the work we do in other areas,” he said Wednesday. “We strive to be an inclusive school division in every way.”

The policy, passed at an April 4 board meeting, codifies what is expected of students and staff in terms of not only acceptance, but also encouragement when it comes to diversity. The policy defines diversity as including but not limited to, “religion, creed, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, disability, age, color, ancestry, nationality, place of origin, race or perceived race.”

“It’s an overarching statement by the board and it’s great to have it enshrined in that way,” Baldwin said.
