Express back on winning track

Randy Palmer/Times-Herald Miller Express hitter Ben Dalke fouls off a pitch during action against Regina on Sunday.

The Moose Jaw Miller Express made sure they would be going into their much-needed two-day break from Western Major Baseball League play on a winning note.

The Express scored single runs in each of the eighth and ninth innings to take a 2-0 victory over the Yorkton Cardinals in Yorkton on Monday, snapping a six-game losing skid and improving to 16-17-0 on the season.

The Cardinals fell to 9-23.

Making only his second start of the season, Express pitcher Grant Westmoreland turned in one of his best performances of the year, scattering six hits and walking three to go along with seven strikeouts in 7.2 innings of work. Zach Fascia came on to earn the save.

Cardinals starter Bryce Mulcahy had been Westmoreland’s equal, giving up five hits and striking out nine in seven innings. His eighth-inning replacement, D.J. Depiero, struggled to find the plate, giving the Express the opening they needed.

After Depiero walked three of the first four batters he faced, Ben Dalke drew a bases-loaded walk to score Lane Harvey with the game-winning run. Joshmar Doran scored on an error the next inning to add some insurance.

The Express are back in action tonight when they travel to Melville to face the Millionaires.
